Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul D. Wolfowitz testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday. The hearing was contentious at times with Republicans trying to limit Democrats to budgetary discussions. Wolfowitz asked for $25 billion for the war in Iraq without giving an account of how it would be spent. He was told by senators that they wanted details. It seems he has previously been wrong on war costs, wrong on troop strength needed, and wrong on the reception that the Iraqis would give to the occupation. Senators from both parties are at last acting like senators and demanding to exercise their duty of congressional oversight. He is to return with more information. His nickname inside the Beltway really is Wolfowitz of Arabia.
