In a surprise move, the Justice Department argued yesterday for $10 billion in penalties against the tobacco defendants. Justices own expert had testified that $130 billion would be needed for tobacco cessation programs. The Justice lawyers had been expected to ask for that amount. There were reports of arguments within Justice over this move with the trial lawyers wanting to go for the $130 billion. This is the suit that John Ashcroft had wanted to drop or put on hold. In summary, certain companies are accused under racketeering statutes of conspiring to hide the dangers and addiction of smoking from the public.
